Sony Ericsson WX1, WS1 Walkman Concept Phones Look Great

SE WX1 and WS1 are two designs created by Esato board member juris15 and shown after the break, in a pretty official-looking poster.

image

Both models pertain to the Walkman series, so they’re music phones, packed with top notch audio technology. Sony Ericsson WX1 features a 3 inch OLED touch display, noise cancelling technology and 32GB of internal memory. Stereo speakers are also to be found on the handset, as well as a 3.5mm audio jack, an 8.1 megapixel camera with HD video recording and WiFi.

The same camera module is incorporated into the WS1, that only gets 16GB of memory, a 3 inch display, but also adds a sliding QWERTY keyboard in the mix. The latter is pretty odd for a music phone, but at least we’ve also got cool specs like the stereo speakers, digital sound enhancement and Clear Stereo technology on board.

World’s First DivX HD Handset- Samsung Wave

Samsung and DivX have just introduced the Wave handset, a world premiere: the first DivX HD certified handset. This is a Bada OS device, with a dedicated website over here and pretty neat specs, among which there’s also DivX certified HD video playback at 720p resolution.

image

It seems that Samsung and DivX will also work on HD certification for Samsung Galaxy S, an Android phone with a 4 inch Super AMOLED screen and other great features. The two companies are demoing DivX HD playback on the Wave and Galaxy S models these days at the CTIA Wireless Show in Samsung’s booth.

Right now, Samsung has over 45 international models that support full HD playback of DivX videos and the number is increasing

As far as the Samsung Wave Bada OS phone is concerned, we remind you that it uses a Super AMOLED display, with a 800 x 480 pixel resolution, full HD support, multitasking, TouchWiz 3.0 UI, 2GB of internal memory (although there should also be a 8GB version) and a microSDHC card slot (32GB support).

7 Things That effect Windows Phone 7 Series

image

Ever since Microsoft CEO Steve Balmer announced Windows Mobile 7 at MWC in Barcelona, everyone in the mobile tech world has been talking about it. Microsoft used to be a pretty big player in the mobile phone space, but recently they have lost massive market share to competitors like RIM’s Blackberry, Apple’s iPhone, and Google’s Android. But is Windows Phone 7 going to save Microsoft and pull them back to the top? Although it is very possible, here are a few limitations that are working against them:

1. Late Release

Windows Mobile 7 was initially slated to be released by 2009. Now, Microsoft is saying that it will be released in late 2010. Instead, in 2009 they released Windows Mobile 6.5, which is supposed to be a brief holdover until the new software could come out.

The main problem for Microsoft is that the longer they wait before they actually release Windows Phone 7, the longer their competitors will have to build market share. In 2009 alone, they lost 13% of their market share. How much will they lose in 2010? Because smart phones are such a social device nowadays, this results in a worse experience for all existing Windows Mobile users.

2. Bad Reviews

The reviews for Windows Mobile 6.5 were definitely not favorable for Microsoft. This bad press doesn’t lead people to sit on the edge of their seats anticipating Windows Mobile 7. The good news is that this has forced Microsoft to completely start over and build a new operating system from scratch. Hopefully they get it right this time.

3. Multi-tasking

One of the rumors going around is that Windows Phone 7 may not be able to multi-task. Of course, this is also a limitation of the iPhone, whereas Blackberries and Androids currently have multitasking capabilities. It is also rumored that iPhones will support multitasking with the release of its 4.0 software. If this is the case, then Microsoft could be left behind even before they begin.

4. Bing

Microsoft’s Bing search engine definitely isn’t bad, but most people still want to use Google. Most people find nothing wrong with Google, and they don’t want to have to learn a new search engine when the one they have been using for a decade is perfectly fine. Windows Mobile 7, of course, completely integrates Bing. Users will have to jump through a bunch of hoops if they want to use Google. All the other phones integrate with Google because they don’t have a search engine of their own to promote.

5. Upgraders could be left in the cold

People who are already using Windows Mobile 6.1 or 6.5 might find that none of the apps they bought work on Windows Mobile 7. Since Windows Mobile 7 was built from the ground up, backwards compatibility is unlikely. Microsoft has said that they will most likely release some porting tools for developers or an emulator, but this isn’t a perfect solution.

6. Apps

When it comes to smart phones (and computers), it’s really all about the apps. Apple will have had a 3 year head start on Microsoft, and their App Store currently boasts more than 150,000 apps. Google’s Android and the Blackberry have been struggling to catch up for over a year. Microsoft hasn’t even started.

7. Usability

Although this isn’t a limitation YET, it is worth keeping in mind. Microsoft is normally very good at creating devices which can perform a lot of tasks and which have a lot of features. Where they usually fail is in the customer experience and the usability of their products. Hopefully they really concentrate on this aspect with Windows Phone 7.

Windows Mobile 7 looks like it could be a great device if Microsoft gets it right. Unfortunately, their competitors have a multi-year head start, and Microsoft will be climbing an uphill battle.

There is a chance they might not have yet been discovered) There are more changes from the thread by talk.maemo.org’s MohammadAG.
This firmware seems to bring many changes to the browser, as you’ll read below. Gradual polishing is extremely welcome, especially when it’s not just in features but in general usability,
“Browser seems much much snappier, scrolling is quick and rendering is uber quick!”
N900’s browser is already super snappy. I welcome this even snapier, faster rendering.

1. Back button is now a back button!
I’ve ranted about this many times. When I press back, I just want to go to the previous page. I don’t want to see my browsing history. The gesture slide already covers that, why the redundancy? Now its fixed. And the layout is different too!
The status bar looks all different in this screenshot. It’s just the clock :S . I like seeing battery life and connection info. (status bar still visible in other screenshots)

2. Video Calling, with ability to display SMS option only for mobile numbers (though in UK we can send SMS to landline. It gets converted into speech)

Samsung Star TV (S5233T) Reveiw

Samsung recently upgraded its Star handset with the Star TV model, also dubbed S5233T and pictured below. This phone comes with nice feature TV viewing . when compared to its predecessor. It’s not T-DMB TV we’re talking, but rather the average analog mobile TV receiver, that provides you with free programs.

image

Samsung Star TV is already available in Southeast Asia and it will also come to India soon, it seems. The maker of this unit customized its interface, providing rich graphical controls. For example, an user will be able to flick the screen in order to move to another channel and click the display once for simple video recording.

There’s also an on-screen keypad for channel entry, plus you’ll see the incoming texts while viewing TV, if you’re interested. Here’s a video demo of the phone:

BlackBerry Storm2 9520 Review

The original Storm was BlackBerry’s first attempt at a touchscreen phone and while it wasn’t a complete disaster it didn’t quite conjure up a whirlwind of adulation either. We’ve known several Storm owners and none of them were overly complimentary about the handset’s long term performance. The main issues were down to the build quality (the side-mounted plastic buttons falling off), the bizarre decision by BlackBerry to not equip the handset with Wi-Fi and the lack of responsiveness from the SurePress screen.

The first of those two issues seem to be solved on the Storm2, but while the new SurePress screen used on this model has been greatly improved, we’re not sure it’s going to prove any more popular than the previous version.

Looks-wise the Storm2 is almost identical to the original, but there are some subtle differences here and there. For example, while the four buttons for answer, menu, back and end are still mounted on the front of the phone, they’re now integrated into the clickable part of the SurePress screen, rather than being separate to it. Also the chrome band that used to run around the outer edge of the phone has now being given a much darker finish so it blends in nicely with the glossy plastic finish that covers much of the rest of the handset (although thankfully the battery cover is still made of metal). Similarly BlackBerry has dumped the plasticky, side-mounted buttons and instead replaced them with rubberised ones that are better anchored into the chassis, which should make them much more durable in the long run.

Nevertheless, some niggles with the design remain. Despite having a 3.5mm headphone jack, we don’t like the way the jack is mounted on the side of the handset as it tends to snag when you’re taking the phone in and out of a pocket. Also, the phone feels quite thick and heavy, certainly much more so than the iPhone or Hero.

The handset runs the new BlackBerry OS v5.0, which includes a number of useful additions. One of the best of these is the updated cut and paste functionality. If you want to cut text, say from an email, and paste it into the web browser you now just have to call up the BlackBerry menu and choose Select. This places two selection tabs that you can position to mark the areas of text you want to cut. Although the system is similar to that used on the iPhone the selection tabs are much larger and more finger-friendly so they’re a good deal easier to position. There’s also updated Maps software and you can now access the clock and connections menu directly from the home screen.

Windows Phone 7 emulator now available

If you are eager to test the new Windows Phone 7 and can't wait until its official launch, there is now a way to do that. Microsoft have released an emulator which gives let's you try out their latest mobile OS straight from your PC.
A standard Windows Phone 7 bin-file comes with the dev kit, but it offers almost nothing except the OS environment. It's intended for developers for testing and debugging their apps.

here is curiosity is the strongest motivator so we tried it and extracted some nice screenshots. As was to be expected, the performance is far from perfect so we can hardly pass a verdict.

If you want to try the emulation for yourself you need to have a Windows Vista or 7 PC and you should follow these steps:
  • You must install Microsoft's Visual Studio 2010 Express for Windows Phone CTP from here (the process requires system reboot).
  • Download  image file.
  • Unrar the downloaded bin into C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\WindowsPhone\v7.0\Emulation\Images\ .
  • Go to C:\Program Files\Microsoft XDE\1.0\ and find the XDE.exe. Right click on it and then select "Create Shortcut" (you may be asked to save that shortcut on the desktop).
  • Go to the properties of your new shortcut and modify the Target field as this: "C:\Program Files\Microsoft XDE\1.0\XDE.exe" "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\WindowsPhone\v7.0\Emulation\Images\WM70Full.bin" .
  • Run the shortcut and patient.
Note that 64-bit Windows users must select Program Files (x86) folder instead the original Program Files.

Tips _______________________

Can't connect to Internet or GPRS/ NoData generates some funny error

1. Go to Settings > Connections > Operator Settings
2. Switch to a different operator from your current operator and press OK.
3. Wait a few seconds for the wait cursor to disappear, and switch back to your original operator again.

If the above doesn't work, try this:

Go to Settings > Connections > Connections > Advanced > Select Networks
At " Programs automatically connects to Internet using ... ", choose My Internet instead of My ISP.

Photo album opens in landscape mode

Rotate your Omnia to landscape, and back again. (Long Press camera button, then repeat)

When I send an sms, the recipient receives ?????????

In Messaging, go to --> Tools --> Options --> Messaging --> Select "Use Unicode when necessary"

GoogleMaps crashes when I enable GPS

This is a known issue with the latest version of Google Maps on the i900. The latest version that works well is v3.2.1 (included)

Youtube doesn't start/ encounters a connection error

Set your time and clock, and try again.
